Wales the final challenge for Azzurri

- RHYS O’NEILL

ONLY Wales stand between Italy and their band of Far North products fulfilling their World Cup dream – though it’s guaranteed to be a bittersweet prize.

Northern Pride stars Ryan Ghietti (halfback), Justin Cas- tellaro (centre) and Colin Wilkie (bench) joined Tully lock Joel Reithmuller in helping the Azzurri to a 62-14 thrashing of Serbia yesterday morning.

The victory in the qualifying rounds in Belgrade knocks Serbia out of the running for next year’s tournament, while only Wales stands between Italy and a certain start. However by beating the Welsh, the Azzurri would top their group and therefore not play a match at the World Cup in Cairns, which is slated to host three games.

A loss to Wales, though, leaves Italy with the chance to qualify second and therefore line up at Barlow Park in what would be an emotional homecoming for the FNQ quartet.

Wilkie admitted it was stirring to earn his Test debut.

“Was lucky enough to represent my mother’s family homeland today,” he wrote on social media.

“Felt extremely proud and honoured. Would have been great to have her still here to watch the game but can’t help but think she was watching from above. Forza Italia.”

Former NRL player Terry Campese starred in the romp, while Wilkie was satisfied lining up next to Italian league pioneer Mirco Bergamasco.
