Mossman in shock fightback

- RHYS O’NEILL

MOSSMAN have rocked the race for Far North golf supremacy after a stunning FNQ Pennants victory over previously unbeaten Paradise Palms.

Mossman, who will host Round 4 next week, were given little chance at Gordonvale’s course yesterday after two heavy losses to open the competition.

Yet Half Moon Bay and Cairns, also likely to be in the mix for a semi-final place, enjoyed a surprise title boost fol- lowing the defeat of the team considered their main rivals.

“Mossman have been beaten 4-1 and 5-0 in the opening two rounds so for them to beat Paradise Palms is a big shock,” FNQ Golf president Sean Metcalf said.

“Paradise were well and truly expected to win.

“It’s looking like a very tight race overall.”

Southern Districts also suffered their first loss, though Cairns was made to work for their 4-1 triumph.

“Cairns didn’t look as rocksolid as they have,” Metcalf said.

“I think Half Moon Bay will give Cairns a shake this year and they are on opposite sides of the draw so they might top their pools and meet in the final.”

Under pennants rules, teams get two points for a win, with individual holes won also important at the end of the competition in case of a tie atop the overall standings.

Next week is at Mossman before the final round is in Mareeba followed by knockout finals across the northern and southern divisions, with the top two teams from each to face off in the final.
