A WOREE man has died after crashing his motorbike into a street sign on a Tablelands road.

The 34-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after he failed to negotiate a bend and veered off the road on the corner of Beantree Rd and Jue Sue Rd, near Atherton.

The man was riding along Beantree Rd about 10.45am when the incident occurred after Mazlin Creek. Investigations continue. The incident looks likely to take the Far North road toll to two for 2017, compared to four at the same time in 2016.

It is believed a group of riders found the man after leaving the Gillies Roadhouse.

About 50 riders participated in a charity bike ride called “Sore Bum Chilli Run” yesterday, but the man was not involved in the event.

Cairns-based motorbike group Coral Coast Riders regularly ride through the Tablelands and Cairns region.

Club president Phil Loudon said Beantree Rd was a less travelled road.

“The surface is quite rough in places and has off camber corners,” he said. “If you are unfamiliar with the route or distracted, it can catch you out. But you can speculate as much as you like – unless we know all the evidence, it is difficult to judge what has actually happened.”

Another motorbike accident occurred at Wangetti after 1pm yesterday.

A woman was taken to hospital with cuts to her leg after she fell off a motorbike that ran into the back of a car.
