TV show a lesson in life

- RHYS O’NEILL rhys.oneill@news.com.au

AS Maddi Wright points out, the white-hot television environment can end up being an invaluable source of strength to any relationship.

Indeed, life has a funny way of delivering lessons from even funnier locations.

Confession time: Nothing tested my partnership with my wife more than the arrival of our kids.

I don’t care what people say, having children been the toughest – and most rewarding – thing I’ve ever done.

With that comes a blend of almighty willpower, unbreakable communication bonds and, at times, some damn good luck and good planning.

Really, that all sounds an awful lot like what those hearty souls go through when given a week, or thereabouts, to build a house while cameras dissect their every move.

I’m not advocating that all budding parents should head to TV websites and sign up for any reno show going (though that sounds like a reasonable and viable option for some).

But Mrs Wright’s experiences give us a healthy reminder that the world has a funny way of testing us – and thus equipping us – with the tools needed to fight bigger and better challenges.

Nothing can compare with the thrill of being a parent, but I bet having no sleep, spending hours doing menial tasks and having the spotlight of the public on you is a pretty good way of preparing you for the life of a parent.
