You can help save our sea life

By Jorja Davies, Year 5, Holy Cross School

DID you know more than 100,000 marine animals such as whales, seals, sea birds and turtles die every year after ingesting or becoming entangled in plastic?

100,000! That’s 200 times the number of children at Holy Cross School.

As stewards of the environment and as part of our role as a Reef Guardian School, Holy Cross annually promotes the Clean Up Australia Day event.

This year Clean Up Australia Day falls on Sunday, March 5 for the community and for businesses it falls today Tuesday, February 28. For schools, Clean Up Day is on Friday, March 3.

You can play a role in this fantastic event.

While humans are the No.1 contributors to pollution, we can help reverse the damage and do our part to help save the environment.

So please, clean up the area where you live or work and if possible, assist in cleaning up a beach nearby.

By helping clean up Australia you are saving the lives of many sea creatures, such as turtles, seals, whales and penguins.

“I will be playing my part in Clean Up Australia Day and hope that I can help the sea life,” student Laila Dall’Ava said.

So, on these clean-up days, put on some gloves, grab a bin bag and set out to clean up your local area.

But remember, looking after the environment takes more than just one day’s work.

Here are three quick tips on how you can continue to help:

● Assist your family in recycling plastic waste properly

● Never throw rubbish on the beach or from a boat

● Encourage your family to take reusable bags every time they shop

Remember these rules and look after the planet!
