Stingrays diving in to help swimmers’ dreams

- JORDAN GERRANS

WITH an ever-growing pool of junior stars, the Cairns Stingrays Swimming Club are looking outside the box.

The club are seeing numbers grow and their swimmers are qualifying for state and national events and club president Jason Salecich wants to make it easier for the swimmers to chase their dreams.

“In the last three years the club has gone from having no representative swimmers for the last 10 years to now having 17 state and national level competitors,” Salecich said.

“We are a growing club with great coaches and a huge passion for being a family friendly club that gets results.

“Our numbers of kids qualifying for state and national championships has more than doubled every year for the last three years.

“At a cost of about $2000 per athlete to attend a meet in Brisbane or Sydney we have to do our bit to help kids go to the competitions they train so hard for.

“Many families can’t afford it and we are committed to give every athlete a taste of high level competition.”

The club will host a “Dive in Near the Drive in” at the Woree Aquatic Centre on March 11 as a fundraising event for the swimmers.

Guests will be able to float around in the pool to view the movie Finding Dory on the big screen.
