40,000 bananas to be split for record
VOLUNTEERS are needed to help secure the Longest Banana Split crown for Innisfail.
Feast of the Senses organisers are aiming to break the world record — held by Selinsgrove in Pennsylvania, USA – by creating an 8km banana split.
The attempt at Innisfail’s Callendar Park tomorrow will use 40,000 local bananas, dragon fruit, yoghurt and icecream.
Cassowary Coast Mayor John Kremastos said the world record attempt was an opportunity to showcase the region’s assets to national and international audiences.
“Agriculture is the backbone of our economy and we are the biggest producers of bananas in Australia so this world record attempt is the perfect fit for our region,” he said.
The Australian Banana Growers’ Council director and event organiser, Jade Buchanan, said hundreds of volunteers were needed to help on the day.
“The volunteers will have to be fit enough to carry a 15kg banana box,” Ms Buchanan said.
“They will be involved in distributing the bananas, the ice-cream and the toppings to the people that will be constructing the banana split across Callendar Park.”
Gates will open about 2pm, with the banana split-making starting about 4pm.
