Who is the best athlete in the Far North? It’s a tough question to answer so the Cairns Post sports team will build the best, looking at key attributes across every code for the next eight days. Today we start with who are our strongest FNQ athletes and the list includes a powerlifter, basketball, rugby league and rugby union players.. Other attributes to be put under the microscope are: speed, vision, smarts, agility, leadership fitness and courage.

NATE JAWAI (CAIRNS TAIPANS)

This is a no-brainer. Have you seen him throw around other NBL big men under the basket? He is probably one of the strongest in Australia, let alone the Far North. At about 127kg, Jawai is a man mountain who pushes most aside with ease, a trait that has led him from Bamaga to the Taipans to the NBA and back again.

BERT WHAP (RUGBY LEAGUE)

The Mossman/Port Douglas prop comes armed with about 130kg of power, a trait conspicuous in nearly every game he plays as he drags defenders extra metres with him. The fact rivals know they must shut down the Sharks’ forward pack says it all about the influence – and strength – of their veteran big man.

DEREK GREY (RUGBY UNION)

Tipping the scales at about 115kg, the Barron Trinity Bulls forward has made an art form out of dominating Far North footy rivals. Though he doesn’t have the profile of others, those who face him concede he is one of the most powerful athletes around. Another selection for the Thunder this week confirmed his status.

TYLER AND NELLIE HOPE (POWERLIFTING)

An obvious nomination given their sport, the duo are building towards the WFF Universe Championships in Rio de Janeiro later this year. The pair qualified to take on the best of the best from around the world at the event in Brazil in late June, proving they pack a punch as much as any Far North athlete.
