Cyclone fails to put upbeat punters off track

A QUIET day at the Cairns Jockey Club gave punters the chance to kick back and enjoy the Big Boyz Binz Raceday.

Mount Sheridan’s Karen Donato said she had never been to a race day besides Cairns Amateurs.

“I normally only go to the races for the Amateurs, so this was the first time I’d gone outside of it,” she said.

“It was a lovely day. It was quiet, there weren’t a whole lot of people, but it was relaxing.”

Ms Donato said most people who avoided the race day were probably concerned about Cyclone Debbie, but she hadn’t let that stop her from having a great time.

“I wasn’t concerned about Cyclone Debbie,” she said.

“We picked some winners on the local races and won some money, and we got to spend some time relaxing and not running after the kids, so it ended up being a perfect day.”

This is the second race meet this year that has attracted smaller crowds due to weather events. Last month’s February 100 Club Race Day drew a small crowd as rain flooded the track.

The next Cairns Jockey Club meeting will be the Norweld Engineering Race Day on Saturday, April 22.

FROM the smallest baby to the most elderly resident, it felt like the whole of Innisfail was at Callendar Park on Saturday to watch the town break the world record for the longest banana split. Ever keen to be seen with the public, local politicians Bob Katter, Shane Knuth and Curtis Pitt also rolled up their sleeves to banana split the afternoon away. Little was left to waste, with hungry participants running among the splits and swiping bananas as they went.
