Old Bulldog shows best box of tricks
THE veteran of FNQ Super League showed the younger generation he can still more than compete at the high level.
The evergreen Billy Ross, of Bulldogs, turned back the clock yesterday afternoon at the Fish Tank as his side eliminated Timberwolves in the first semi-final.
Bulldogs were without Taipans development player Anthony Fisher and Kerry Williams but found a way to win on the back of Ross’ influence, 85-77. In the second semi-final, Redlynch booked their spot in the decider.
Ross was the driving force for Bulldogs, contributing from the inside and outside, on his way to a game-high 29 points in the victory.
“The old guy can still play a little bit,” Ross said with a laugh after the win.
“I wanted to show these younger guys that I can still play, just a little bit.”
Bulldogs advance to take on Phoenix in tomorrow night’s preliminary final after they fell to Redlynch in the second semi-final yesterday.
Bulldogs had to survive a late charge led by Taipans development player Tevin Jackson and Joel Matysek.
Riley Clarke, Jakobe Hunter and Nathan Selsby also scored in double figures in the win for Bulldogs.
“We had to dig deep and we got lucky today,” Ross said.
“I think they may have underestimated us because Anthony Fisher was not here.
“Our young guys really played well, we stayed in our zone the whole game and it worked excellent for us. “It was hot in there though.” Redlynch’s Michael Dem- ertze connected from outside on a number of occasions in their tight win over Phoenix.
He made the free throw to clinch the win with under five seconds remaining.
In the women’s FNQ Super League, Phoenix advanced past Redlynch in the first semifinal as Summah Evans and Rashada Kaigey combined for 41 points.
Phoenix will face All Stars tomorrow night after they fell to Timberwolves in the second semi-final later in the day.
Timberwolves go straight through to Friday’s decider.
