I enjoyed reading the Our Lives birthday story (CP, 25/3) regarding Charlie Vella,

he was a post-war immigrant who worked as a cane cutter after arriving here. It is a hot back-breaking job and after 7 years was able to bring his family here. Charlie and his family are the type of hard-working immigrants Australia wants and needs. I say thank you Charlie and have a great 100th birthday champ. Big Bill Cairns

We have three rescue choppers, so they service two at the same time, is anyone being asked to “please explain.” Brad Woree

Your paper is outlandishly “pro labor” which is why so many of your readers only hear one side of politics, also why niether party has ever done anything positive for our area, why help an area that you know won’t change it’s voting pattern? Also it’s the reason why voters here don’t change! Robert, Earlville

RE Werner (CP, 25/3) What possible business is it of yours or ours how the poms arm their police force. There are much more pressing issues in this country you could generate your energies towards. GJJ. Mission Beach.

We received our home insurance renewal. It had gone up just over $1000 in the 12 months. I rang our insurer saying will be looking elsewhere. He asked me 5 questions about our property and cyclones. He then gave me a new quote and our premium had been reduced by $900. Go figure!! Home owner, Cairns
