Win big with mascots

CAIRNS CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL HAS A FUN CONTEST FOR CREATIVE KIDS, WRITES KERSTIN KEHREN

-

IT’S less than a month until the Cairns Children’s Festival draws some of our youngest residents to the Tanks Arts Centre and Cairns Botanic Gardens for a day of play.

Visitors to the first Tanks Monthly Market of 2017 yesterday had their first chance to have their photo taken with this year’s festival mascots as part of an interactive display.

The colourful cut-out features a cast of characters based on local flora and fauna and is part of the Faces of Fame competition being run in the leadup to the May 21 festival.

The competition is offering six prize packs that include a family pass to one of the festival’s two ticketed shows.

To be in the running, participants must take a photograph of their family or friends in the display’s cut-out hole.

The photograph then must be uploaded to the Tanks Arts Centre Facebook page or to your Instagram account using the hashtag #cairnschildrensfestival.

The cut-out will be moved to different locations, with the Tanks Arts Centre’s Facebook and Instagram accounts to reveal the sites in coming weeks.

Cairns Regional Council cultural services chairwoman, Councillor Linda Cooper, said the interactive display featuring the mascots would be based at the Tanks Arts Centre this coming week.

“The following two weeks are in very well-known children’s locations and I’ll say no more,” she said.

“Families of Cairns will soon work out where they are ... go and have some fun with them. They’re gorgeous things to have your photos taken with, but obviously a great chance for you to win prizes as well for the children’s festival.”

The Cairns Children’s Festival has become a mainstay of the Cairns entertainment lineup, with last year’s event attracting about 4000 children.

“Children are very creative and have a lot of talents,” Cr Cooper said.

“And bringing them all together in a festival that gives them a chance to participate, not just to learn new things but celebrate being these great, awesome creative kids, is something that’s worth council supporting.”
