Kapow strikes memory for ‘Pop’

THE late Wayne “Pop” Massingham always loved heading to Mount Garnet and his son Stephen was overjoyed to train the winner of the last race over two huge days of racing at the track, 163km from Cairns.

Over Friday and Saturday, 10 races were contested at Mt Garnet Amateur Turf Club, with Mackay’s John Manzelmann the standout trainer.

Manzelmann, one of the best trainers in regional Queensland, claimed three races on Friday but could not find another on Saturday as Townsville hoop Graham Kliese piloted four winners over the two days.

But it was the Massinghams who finished Saturday smiling as Our Kapow was too strong in the final race, the Mt Garnet Roadhouse Gunnawarra Shield Benchmark 60 Handicap.

Renowned trainer and legend of Far North racing Pop Massingham died in 2015 at 76 after a short battle with cancer.

Six-year-old Our Kapow has been knocking on the door its past four starts but broke through by under a length, ahead of Our Recipe for Ronald Finch.
