President Trump chose to snub Washington and skip the traditional White House Correspondents’ Dinner, instead heading to a farm show in Pennsylvania to address more than 11,000 “true believers”.
He was the first Republican to win the blue state since 1988, and the first president to turn down an invitation to the Correspondents’ Dinner since Ronald Reagan in 1981.
“A large group of Hollywood actors and Washington media are consoling each other in a hotel ballroom in our nation’s capital right now,” Mr Trump said yesterday to cheers as he opened his speech.
“They are gathered together for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner – without the President.
“And I could not possibly be more thrilled than to be more than 100 miles away from the Washington swamp, spending my evening with all of you and with a much, much larger crowd and much better people, right? Right?”
Mr Trump went on to list his achievements since his January 20 inauguration, while lambasting the “fake news” mainstream media.
“We are keeping one promise after another and frankly the people are really happy about it,” Mr Trump said.
“The previous administration gave us a mess.”
Mr Trump’s boycott of the annual Correspondents’ Dinner – where he has previously been the butt of jokes – saw less celebrities in attendance than previously at the Washington roast.
Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the two reporters who broke the Watergate story, were the keynote speakers. Both addressed press freedom.
“Mr President, the media is not fake news. Let’s take that off the table going forward,” Mr Woodward said.
