Lost and found solutions

BEING separated from their parents can be a terrifying experience for children.

It is certainly a scary scenario for a parent; it happened to me, briefly, and almost immediately you can feel the panic start to surge.

Fortunately I found my child quickly, but it was a reminder that if you are heading to a festival or show with your children, you need to have an action plan in case you do become separated.

Last year, Cairns Children’s Festival had 4000 people roll up, that’s a lot of children and a lot of mums and dads.

Before heading to the festivities, talk to your children and set some boundaries.

Importantly, talk to them about what they need to do if you do become separated.

One tip, make sure your children know you by name; there will be hundreds of “mums” and “dads” out there.

Think about writing your phone number on your child, perhaps their arm, use a wristband, or like we once did, on their shoes. Don’t, however, write their name, as it could be used by a stranger to gain your child’s trust.

When you get to the event, find an easily recognisable spot to designate as a meeting point in case you get separated.

These are just some ideas, there are plenty more.

It is important you have a plan, don’t simply assume “it’ll all be OK” – a little forethought and planning can go a long way.
