Tigers blow golden chance

- JACOB GRAMS

EDGE Hill missed a golden chance to earn their first win of the Premier Men’s season, but coach Rob Wales has urged his side to keep the faith as things will turn around.

The Tigers scored the opening goal against Marlin Coast on Saturday night but the Rangers fought back with three goals, their biggest haul of the season, to win 3-1.

Wales said his side had to learn to refocus in times of adversity and have belief they had the talent to compete.

“We scored in the first 15 minutes and we were full of energy and enthusiasm but they got one back around the 30minute mark and it took the wind out of our sails,” he said.

“I cast my mind back to what happened in Round 1 against Leichhardt (a 3-3 draw) and it was exactly the same.

“It’s a very young squad and we’re still learning. In our roster we’ve got a couple of 16year-olds and other guys 19, 20 and a lot of them haven’t played A-grade before.”

It is somewhat a baptism of fire in a competitive 2017 Premier Men’s season but Wales said that should only remind Edge Hill’s youngsters any team could win on their day.

“The results this season are not ones you’d expect judging by previous years ... and it’s something our guys need to be aware that it’s pretty close,” he said.

“They can’t be too disheartened. They will get a win sometimes.”

Mareeba moved to the top of the ladder with a 4-1 win against Southside on Sunday, equal with Stratford, who have a game in hand.
