KIDS across Cairns are in for a treat as new, state-of-the-art playground installations replace the old equipment at Muddy’s Playground.

A new Twin Mega Tower (pictured) and Mouse House will replace the facilities closest to the playground’s cafe.

Cairns councillor and sport and community services chairwoman Cathy Zeiger said the park needed a facelift after being climbed over by thousands of children every year.

“It’s such a popular spot, it makes sense that after a few years it would have to be updated to keep the kids happy,” she said.

She said families from across the region, as well as visitors, enjoyed the park regularly.

“You have mums and dads always thinking about where they can take the kids and meet up, and Muddy’s is where they always want to go,” she said.

“The kids get on the equipment and their imaginations are at work and parents can sit back and have a coffee.”

She said the redevelopment would also be a long-term drawcard for families visiting from across Australia and from overseas.

“We have a lot of visiting families, who stay locally in the city, so having that new playground will make a big difference for them,” she said.

“The whole area is just conducive to happiness.”

A council spokeswoman said the work in the park, which draws 17,500 visitors every month, would be speedy.

“Work on the replacement started last week and will take up to four weeks to complete, weather permitting,” she said.

The council spokeswoman said other play areas were still open to the public while construction continued.

“While the affected playground will be off-limits for the duration of the works, it will not impact on any other part of Muddy’s, including the wet play areas, which will be operating Main picture: ANNA ROGERS as usual,” she said.

The construction of the new playground is expected to be completed by the first week of June. The cost was not available. Muddy’s Playground is open 9am- 7pm daily.

It was built as part of a multi-million dollar redevelopment of the city’s Esplanade, including the Lagoon, boardwalks, cycling and walking paths and skate park.
