Operators call for large cruise ship infrastructure upgrades
PRESSURE is mounting on Ports North as two of Australia’s biggest cruise operators call for nationwide port upgrades, including Cairns, so bigger ships can be accommodated.
Both Carnival Australia (P& O Cruises and Princess Cruises) and RCL Cruises (Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises) say the only factors holding back growth are better port facilities and more capacity throughout Australia.
A long-awaited revised Environmental Impact Statement, which has studied the dredging of the Cairns shipping channel to allow larger ships to dock at the port, is due to be released next month.
