PORT STORM BREWS

Operators call for large cruise ship infrastructure upgrades

- NICK DALTON

PRESSURE is mounting on Ports North as two of Australia’s biggest cruise operators call for nationwide port upgrades, including Cairns, so bigger ships can be accommodated.

Both Carnival Australia (P& O Cruises and Princess Cruises) and RCL Cruises (Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises) say the only factors holding back growth are better port facilities and more capacity throughout Australia.

A long-awaited revised Environmental Impact Statement, which has studied the dredging of the Cairns shipping channel to allow larger ships to dock at the port, is due to be released next month.

FROM wherever he might be in Australia, Cairns commercial property expert Greg Wood likes to stay in touch with all the local business news.

While a regular reader of the Cairns Post’s print edition, the Knight Frank Cairns managing director said the digital format had numerous benefits.

“As a platform, going online can be so easy,” he said.

“And when you live in a regional centre like Cairns, it’s important to be parochial and know what’s going on around you.

“Commercial property is nuanced, so it’s also good to have a broad understanding of the local market.”
