Leaders need courage

-

IN the wake of the mass murders of innocents in the UK, it is a timely reminder that we can no longer ignore the constant threats of radicals here at home who rave of their intent to change our nation’s way of life.

Their regular brazen threats are certainly an abuse of free speech.

Their ability to do so demonstrates the smothering influence of political correctness, which is poisoning our nation’s way of life.

It further reveals the lack of courage in all political parties, which listen and do nothing other than bow and tug forelocks to appease.

Surely it is time to face the reality of the growing dangers confronting our society and for all politicians to show some moral courage and act.

It was once called leadership. George Mansford, East Trinity Shearer’s care since he came to Cairns.

He is a very passionate man and as a haematologist I can think of only one word – par excellence.

Dr Shearer takes personal care of his patients and doesn’t consider them as just a number.

I switched over to his clinic because of my busy lifestyle, as I didn’t have the time to wait at the hospital for three or four hours to see him.

I also made the switch to have one person less in the long hospital queue and the few extra dollars out of pocket is well worth it for my time.

Dr Shearer’s wife, Meredine, who assists in the clinic, is also a wonderful person and involved with our community.

Here we have two wonderful compassionate medical people in Cairns and we should give them full support with their clinic at Flecker House. Werner Schmidlin, Yorkeys Knob parking in the CBD (CP 25/5). More outside the box planning is needed by the council. Where are our town planners?

1. Cairns has a large number of SUVs and 4WD vehicles that cannot fit in most council-style car parks and under shopping centres. So changing the deck chairs in the council car park (with no new spots) helps few, if any.

2. Why was JCU allowed to provide an additional campus in the CBD when there is plenty of room on the existing campus for expansion?

3. Why has the new civic centre, aquarium and Munro Martin Parklands been allowed within sight of each other without a car park?

Heaven forbid if ever these three venues have a function around the same time.

4. New high-rise office blocks. Where will the workers park?

If you have work in the city, or just have a long meeting, you need to move your car every three hours or face a fine. Cathie Cummins, Mt Sheridan 1805: Emperor Napoleon of France is
