Singleton says old fire burning again

- JORDAN GERRANS

AFTER spending almost a decade away from state league netball, Marlin Jenna Singleton is ready for a return to finals action.

Singleton and her Marlin Coast Marlin teammates will be looking for two big wins this weekend at Smithfield YMCA to cement a place in the QSNL Division 2 Country top two.

Singleton plays for South Cairns Cutters locally and previously featured at a state league level in New South Wales before relocating to the Far North.

“It was quite a long time be- tween my state league appearances – almost 10 years,” Singleton said.

“My first game in Queensland was a bit of a shock to the system but it was great to have the challenge.

“I played water polo, which took over in my early 20s; I did not play serious netball for a while but I really got back into it once I moved to Cairns.

“The local competition is really inviting and I enjoyed it, it sparked my motivation to return to state league.”

The top two of the QSNL Division 2 Country advance to the Division 2 finals at the State Netball Centre, Upper Mount Gravatt next month.

The Marlins are 6-4 after 10 games, equal on points with the Capricorn Claws, but the Claws have played one more game. The Magnetic North Steelcats are assured a top two finish, on top of the ladder with 18 points but the second spot is still well and truly up for grabs.

The hosts tackle the Claws Saturday night before playing Widebay Thundercats on Sunday morning.

“We are pretty confident how we have been playing, we have been improving through the season,” Singleton said.

“It will be really nice to have a crowd behind us for a change, instead of against us.

“We are confident we can make the top two. It will not be easy but we are looking forward to the challenge.”
