On Thursday twenty-four players enjoyed an afternoon of social bowls. The winners on the day were V McAvoy/I Zangrande and R Maguire/G Goes. Roy retired hurt after the first game so Gordon came in as a sub. Gordon claimed that it was his bowls that were responsible for the win but Roy claimed that the win would not have been possible without his efforts in the first game. I think that Vince and Igor were the ones who made the win possible. Before the game on Saturday a General meeting was held to discuss the adoption of the new constitution for the new combined club. The meeting voted in favour of the new constitution to enable the formation of a combined club committee to manage the affairs of the Innisfail Bowls Club. After the registration of the new constitution a meeting will be called to vote for the new committee. Following the meeting the members played social bowls but unfortunately the game was washed out. Those players involved will not have to play green fees if they play on this coming Wednesday or Thursday. One game of Club Pairs was decided on Sunday. G Anderson/A Morrison d G Goes/B Wallis 19-9. STRATFORD

The solar inverter was installed on Friday so it should not be long before Ergon comes out and does the final installation and we see a change for the better in our electricity bill. We managed to put a side together to travel to Babinda and play our washed out game from the first round of pennants. Lee Eborall/B Dog/ CD/Bruce Allan made up one team and won their game, whilst Joe Brissoni/Greame Brook/ Peter Williamson/Rob Bailey also won their game well done and thanks for your efforts boys. Stratford took out the day 43 to Babinda 26. Stratford will be celebrating our 65th anniversary on the July 14 to 16 and would like to invite all bowlers to come down and enjoy the celebrations. Friday evening will be barefoot bowls with a barbecue, Saturday will be a Men’s competition, and hopefully we can organise a mixed competition on the Sunday. For more information please contact Rob Beetles Bailey on 0437 821873. Wednesday’s and Saturday’s Social Bowls start at 1pm - and what better place to be on those days than on a grass green. To help selectors it is preferable if names could be in by about 11.30am. The club’s telephone number is 4055 1344, and if you leave a message please also leave a call-back number. This helps in the event of cancellations due to wet weather. Bowls uniform is optional. Beginners and newcomers are welcome. Stratford Bowls Club is a popular venue for ‘barefoot bowls’ functions, parties, and/or meetings. If you have any queries regarding functions or hall hire, please ring 4055 1344. TFNQ

Vale Maxy Jamison - a true larrikan and real good guy. Max Jamison passed away on Sunday May 28. Please pass this sad news onto your members. Max was a great supporter of bowls in our district and played at every opportunity and at every locality from Cooktown to Dimbulah to Tully and everywhere in between (and beyond as well). He was also a strong supporter of women’s bowls and played in many mixed tournaments including the State Mixed Pairs. Max served on committees at Cairns Bowls Clubs for many years and in recent years he served on committees at West Cairns Bowls Club. I found Max to be the greatest supporter/worker a president could have on his committee. His passing leaves a void that will be impossible to fill and his cheeky attitude on the green will be sadly missed by many of us. Phantayshar’s heart is heavy. West Cairns Bowls Club will be able to advise arrangements later in the week. Max would have been 60 today. I pray that Max will now be enjoying a game with some of our fellow bowlers who we have also lost in recent times. Rest in Peace Max. Sincerely Tony McAlary and Phantom. TFNQ state mixed pairs results: Quarterfinals results - B Lynne/S Brady d N Gray/B Fitzpatrick 26-16. S Rowe/F Obah d S Hemensley/L Thompson 21-17. Semi-finals - D Hester/T Pettigrew d S Rowe/F Obah 26-25. B Lynne/S Brady d D Deegan/K Deegan 24-21. Final at Mareeba, 1pm, Sunday June 4: D Hester/T Pettigrew v B Lynne/S Brady.

FNQ pennants results: Division 1 - Bros Edmonton (3 from 4) with two wins over the weekend, have moved to the top of the table, equal with Edge Hill (3 wins from 4). South Johnstone remain on 2 from 2, Marlin Coast 2 from 3, Cairns and Innisfail 1 from 3, and West Cairns 0 from 5. Bros Edmonton d Cairns 55-54. Edge Hill d West Cairns 57-47. Bros Edmonton d West Cairns 62-52. Division 2 - Stratford (4 wins from 4) moved to the top of the table with a good win over Babinda (1 from 4) last Saturday. Edge Hill 1 are also on (4 wins from 4 games). Edge Hill 2 are (3 from 5), Cairns (1 from 3) and Babinda and West Cairns (both 1 from 4). Innisfail trails on 0 wins from 4 games. Stratford d Babinda 43-26. Edge Hill 2 d West Cairns 5330. Division 3 - No play last weekend. Babinda men’s fours - As per the event calendar, Babinda Men’s 4’s was to be held on June 25. However, Pennant dates have smothered this date and we resheduled to Sunday July 16, at the last FNQBA meeting. It was then discovered that Stratford Club is celebrating its 65th Anniversary on this date. The new date is Sunday July 30!!
