Philippine celebration heads weekend of national pride Get in for your fill of culture
FILIPINOS across Cairns are welcoming people of all backgrounds to celebrate the 119th Philippines Independence Day with them.
The Philippine Cultural Society of Cairns’ committee member and celebration organiser Jocelyn Colbert said Saturday’s party was not to be missed.
“Apart from the amazing food we have, there are also cultural performances,” she said.
“We’ll have singers who will have Filipino songs that relate to the country.
“My favourite part is definitely the cultural dances. It’s bright and colourful.
“The dancers all represent different islands and different cultures in the Philippines.”
She said Filipinos across the world would all be celebrating together on Saturday.
“All Filipinos gather on or before the day to celebrate Independence Day around the world,” she said.
As well the Cairns Indian Association will host its Annual Mega Indian Festival on the same day.
The festivities kick off at 4pm at the Edge Hill State School and feature dance, music, food and art from India.
