INNISFAIL MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING AND CHOPPING HEAD OFF CROC

AN Innisfail man will face court next month charged over the decapitati­on of a large crocodile which was left dead in a creek south of Cairns.

Police yesterday charged a 60-year-old Innisfail man with a range of offences, including taking a protected animal which is estimated to be at least 100 years old, has been put up for a silent auction after it was recently turned in at the Gordonvale Waste Transfer Station.

The council’s waste branch manager Steve Cosatto said an elderly Gordonvale woman under the Nature Conservati­on Act, producing and possessing dangerous drugs (cannabis), and firearm offences.

He will appear in Innisfail Magistrate­s Court on July 3.

Police will allege the man killed the 4.5m-long saltwater crocodile, which was found dead by a member of the public in a creek near Eubenangee Swamp, north of Innisfail, on had cleared out her backyard shed and wanted to get rid of the daybed and a wooden “geisha” table.

He said station staff recognised the items as being quite valuable.
