Triumph pushing Crowley to higher goals
QUEENSLANDER Sarah Crowley will need to reassess her goals for the Ironman World Championship in Kona later this year after a slashing win in the Cairns Ironman.
Crowley was third last year but went two better in 2017 as she finished just over 10 minutes ahead of the chasing pack to claim her first Asia-Pacific Championship.
The Brisbane-based Crowley declared it was her career best result as the 34-year-old will now hunt a top-10 finish at Kona in October.
“Who knows now how I will Sarah Piampiano 1:05:38 4:52:58 Kristin Moeller go,” she said optimistically. “I might have to reassess.
“I am hoping for a top 10 at least now.
“But before that, I will do the Frankfurt Ironman in four weeks, which will be tough to turn around for.” RUN FINISH 4:50:00 3:06:01 8:58:14 3:02:49 9:08:20 1:05:22 5:00:50 3:03:29 9:14:08
Some of the plaudits for Crowley and Josh Amberger winning yesterday should go to coach Cameron Watt.
Watt is a former professional Ironman and after retiring in 2009, he eventually turned to coaching.
Crowley said Amberger was a perfect training partner.
“We are going to be fighting it out to see who is top dog at training now,” Crowley said with a laugh.
“We support each other really well and complement each other too. It is a great training environment.
“I was pumped to see Cam during the race and really happy for Josh.”
Crowley ran, swam and cycled with intent yesterday.
“Last year I was trying a few new things and this year it was about solidifying those and I came out with a vengeance,” Crowley said.
