Kasper sees light in role as a winger

- JACOB GRAMS

KASPER Holmbech shapes as one of FNQ Heat’s key attacking weapons going into the second half of the NPL season after relishing his newfound responsibilities as a winger.

After moving from Denmark to the Far North as a striker, Holmbech has shown his class over the past month as he fits into Tim Campbell’s plans and was a huge part of the FFA Cup success on Saturday night.

The coach has said the rise of his winger had been of little surprise after efforts to improve his strength, which on top of his natural speed has allowed him to dominate contests.

Holmbech said he was relishing his starting responsibilities with the Heat missing Darcy McCormack and Crios O’Hare, but the continued strong performances of the international could make it hard for Campbell to leave him out when they return.

“I’m doing well. I didn’t get that much play time through the first half of the season but now that Darcy’s gone and O’Hare’s on vacation, that left a space for me and I kept my fitness, although I didn’t get much play time,” Holmbech said.

“I feel like when I get more play time, when I start, I can step up my game and I can feel the difference.

“I’ve been in the gym working on my fitness and I’ve been progressing quite a lot.

“When I came from Denmark I was a striker first but I’ve been working hard on the wing position and I’m comfortable playing the winger now.”
