Windmill Lane’s boss takes a tilt at Tyzone

WATCH out Tyzone, Ricky Ludwig and Windmill Lane are coming for you.

After stringing together their fifth win in a row at Cannon Park on Saturday afternoon, Ludwig declared his stable star the best horse in North Queensland with a tilt at the Cleveland Bay Handicap on the horizon.

Windmill Lane, by Written Tycoon from Turtle Dove, ran the 1250m trip in what is believed to be a course record time to claim the IGA Cup Open Handicap, ahead of Stable Surprize for Trevor Rowe.

The Atherton-based Ludwig, with just the four horses in work, is adamant his five-yearold gelding is up to challenging Roy Chillemi’s champion in Townsville next month.

“Well, I believe Tyzone is the best three-year-old in North Queensland,” Ludwig said.

“But I think Windmill Lane is the best horse in North Queensland.

“Honestly, I think he will test Tyzone.

“Tyzone is a good horse, do not get me wrong, he is the best three-year-old in his class, but it is different when it comes against the older company.”

Windmill Lane was too quick for another Chillemi emerging star, Concluder, last month at Townsville and will have one more start before a crack at the Cleveland Bay.

Windmill Lane, with apprentice hoop Amanda Thomson on board, was previously trained by Pat Hyland in Victoria and now has won five races from eight starts in North Queensland.

“I thought he would win easy to be honest but he had to do a lot of chasing of the tearaway leader,” Ludwig said.

“He had come back from a spell a different horse since I got him from Victoria.”

Saturday’s five-race card also doubled as the IGA Charity Race Day, which aimed to raise vital funds for local leukaemia patients and their families for the Queensland Leukaemia Foundation.

Thomson rode a winning double on Saturday afternoon, claiming the final two races on the card, while Emily Cass, John Lambie and Graham Watson also rode a winner each.

I BELIEVE TYZONE IS THE BEST THREE-YEAR-OLD IN NORTH QUEENSLAND ... BUT I THINK WINDMILL LANE IS THE BEST HORST IN NORTH QUEENSLAND ... HE WILL TEST TYZONE
