Warm-up for Scott

Aussie nails equal 10th

-

ADAM Scott has gained a crucial confidence boost ahead of this week’s US Open by surging up the leaderboard in the final round of the St Jude Classic in Memphis.

The Australian shot a twounder-par 68 to finish the US PGA tournament at six under in an eight-way tie for 10th, firing four birdies yesterday to go with two bogeys.

He was four shots behind American Daniel Berger, who successfully defended his title thanks to his second straight 66 in the final round.

Scott’s tournament highlight was a six-under 64 second round which included an eagle on the par-five 16th.

But the former world No.1 followed it with a disappointing one-over third round to head into the final day in a tie for 22nd.

Compatriot Matt Jones, 37, faded out of contention with a final-round 72, claiming equal-18th with five under for the tournament.

Jones started the final round in the hunt for a second US PGA tour win at two shots off the lead and tied sixth.

But he faltered with bogeys on the fifth and seventh after finding the left-hand rough on each off the tee, before recording a double bogey on the parfour 12th hole.

■ Minjee Lee’s brave charge in the LPGA Classic came to an end late in the final round when four bogeys on the back nine cruelled any chances of a surprise win at Whistle Bear.

Four shots behind the overnight leader and tied for sixth, the young Australian played herself into contention with three birdies on the front nine.

But bogeys on the 11th, 13th, 15th and 18th holes stymied her progress and she eventually finished four shots behind Ariya Jutanugarn
