City expedition has a capital gain

By Ben Jacovos, Year 3, St Andrew’s Catholic College

-

ON Tuesday, June 6, all of the Year 3 classes travelled by bus from St Andrew’s Catholic College in Redlynch in to the city.

We got to sit with our friends as we travelled on the bus.

One of the games we played on the bus was Spotto, where we had to find things beginning with each letter of the alphabet.

It was tricky to find anything starting with V or X or a Z.

First we visited the Cairns City Library. While we were there we took part in the Brick By Brick: Build Your Own Capital Exhibition.

This exhibition taught us a lot of interesting information about Australia’s national capital, Canberra.

We watched a video about Canberra and discovered that Sir Walter Burley-Griffin designed the city to surround a lake. We learned about iconic buildings such as the Australian War Memorial, Old Parliament House and the National Museum of Australia.

Next we designed and built various buildings using Lego.

Our friends designed their own creations, brick by brick.

Just before we left the library, each group selected a suitable site for their buildings or park spaces.

We placed our creations on a mat showing a map of Canberra. We designed our very own city. It was interesting to learn what is needed to design a capital city.

Then we visited CQ University.

While we were there we learned some first aid skills, including CPR.

We also got to look at some laboratories the university students use for their classes.

We saw where nurses train and how engineers learn to design and create built environments.

My favourite part was learning CPR. We know now how to save a life.

We also learned some basic bandaging skills. My friends pretended to have a broken arm, and we provided first aid.

We had a great day.
