A LION-hearted effort has helped JCU Mariners get one foot into FNQ Rugby semifinals.

Mariners’ hooker Liam Duncan turned in a man-ofthe-match performance as his side toppled Southside Crusaders in a 32-26 nailbiter at James Cook University on Saturday afternoon.

Duncan shook off a corked thigh to lead an “inspiring” display from the home team.

JCU coach Doc McMahon said all players put their bodies on the line.

“No one can motivate you to do that. You have to go out and do that yourself,” he said.

“We have been doing it for a quite a long time ... these are all basic things that these young guys are learning and putting into practice.”

McMahon said Duncan’s ability to overcome a “really bad” corked thigh that he sufffered at training earlier in the week demonstrated traits of “doing it for your mate”.

“He had one thigh one and half size of the other one – It was really painful but he went out there and showed everyone how to over come pain in the face in battle,” McMahon said.

“It was pretty inspiring, but he wasn’t the only one.”

In other games Barron Trinity Bulls continued their undefeated season with a 27-7 win against Brothers and Wanderers beat the Mudcrabs 19-12.
