Weiss revels in chance to go on attack

- JORDAN GERRANS

EXPERIENCED Manunda backman Nathan Weiss has lived out every defender’s dream.

After years of having big full forwards trying to kick bags of goals on him, he turned the tables on Saturday afternoon, booting a haul of 14 majors in Hawks drubbing of Cairns City Lions. Hawks coach Marc Harbrow switched up his structures against the winless Lions, sending regular full forward Ezekiel Frank down back with Weiss (pictured) punted to the other end.

The classy defender repaid his coach with the double figure tally, which were his first goals of the season in the 44.26 (290) – 1.1 (7) win.

“Nathan has been a defender his entire life but he is a big, strong guy so we had confidence he would do a job for us,” Harbrow said.

“He has played on guys like Matt Walsh for his whole career so he knows all the tricks of a forward.”

Malcolm Lynch made a welcome return for the Hawks with seven majors as Luke Crookes and Joel Karwan were busy in the win.

“We wanted to really work on our disposal efficiency and our execution,” Harbrow said.

“The scoreboard was not a focus for us but it took care of itself when we did those things well.”

Bradley Wallace kicked the Lions only goal in another tough outing for the Holloways Beach club.

In the other lopsided Round 12 fixture, Port Douglas had 13 goal kickers in their 187-point win over North Cairns. Skipper Kye Chapple, Mathew Medcraft and Kurt Bradshaw shared in 14 of the Crocs 23 goals at Watsons Oval.

Against his former side, Tom Clough tried all day while Heath Molloy kicked all of the Tigers goals.

The Tigers will now look forward to a Friday night contest against Manunda.
