Lions have pride in depth

- JACOB GRAMS The Southside Comets v Mareeba game scheduled for the weekend had to be postponed to July 19.

A RISING injury toll will not stop the Lions roaring after getting their season back on track with a 4-0 win against Stratford.

Emma Fletcher stepped up to strike a hat-trick at Nick Brko Field on Sunday as Rochelle Jones controlled things through midfield in the Premier Women’s clash.

Leichhardt coach Mareeta Nicolau said the win showed the players were getting used to different roles as a result of injuries to a few key players.

“It’s good to get back in the winner’s circle after a draw last week,” she said.

“We’ve got a few long-term injuries, so that’s going to throw a spanner in the works, but we bounced back well this week.

“You can’t control injuries, but we do have a lot of depth.”

The Lions are still just two points behind Innisfail United, who beat JCU Strikers 3-0, and Nicolau said the premiership race was still alive.

“If we focus on our game, we’re still contenders as are all the top teams,” she said.

“One result can go the way people don’t expect and it can really change the whole table.”

Nicolau dismissed suggestions Edge Hill, who flexed their muscles with a 15-1 win over Marlin Coast could not defend their title.

“They’re definitely right in it. They were our only loss this year and they’re a really good team,” she said. Thursday 6am: Portugal v Chile Friday 6am: Germany v Mexico
