Roe’s cameo adds polish to Bulldogs

- JORDAN GERRANS

AFL CAIRNS DAMIEN Roe already has the highest individual honour in AFL Cairns but will the flashy midfielder be back for the ultimate team success later this year.

It is the question Centrals Trinity Beach’s rivals, Port Douglas and South Cairns, will be pondering in the back end of this season.

Can the Bulldogs add the reigning best and fairest player in the competition as a top-up to their already stacked midfield unit?

The Darwin-based Roe left the door open for a return to Crathern Park in the back end of the season.

“I am not too sure, we will see how we go,” he said.

“It was a bit hard out there with my match fitness against South, we will see what happens.

“It was good sitting in a halfforward flank with some very good players we have through the middle of the ground now.”

The classy ball user was back in the Far North for teammate Max McLachlan’s engagement party on Saturday and played his first game of the season for the Dogs.

He turned out for NTFL club Wanderers four times FRIDAY 8pm: Manunda Hawks v North Cairns Tigers (Cazalys Stadium) SATURDAY 2pm: Cairns City Lions v Cairns Saints (Power Park) 3pm: Port Douglas Crocs v South Cairns Cutters (Port Douglas Sporting Complex) Bye: Centrals TB Bulldogs over the summer. Bulldogs coach Mick Seymour would love to have the West Australian in his squad come finals time.

“Roey is held in high regard among the players at our footy club, especially with the guys he played with last year,” Seymour said.

“The new guys are really keen to play with him as well.

“We are looking at what we can do for rest of the year, it has to work for both parties.

“It will depend on Damien and his work in Darwin as well as our team balance as well.”

Roe’s Crathern Medal triumph last year was the club’s first winner in almost 20 years.

He polled in 11 of the Dogs’ 18 games, including three best on grounds and six two vote games.

The Dogs have the bye this weekend.
