Ruby Simms and friend Jazz Woodall have been practising for weeks ahead of the dance heats of the Cairns Junior Eisteddfod. The 12-year-olds were excited to show off their moves yesterday in a lyrical performance, a form of ballet. “I’ve done many eisteddfods before,” Ruby said. “I like dance because you get to express yourself with your actions and words. I’d love to be a dance professional.” Jazz loved that she had made dozens of friends through the hobby.

I’d love to be a dance professional.”

Jazz loved that she had made dozens of friends through the hobby.

Both girls’ mothers proudly watched from the audience.

Co-ordinator Raj Patel said the event had attracted record crowds.

“This is a good breeding ground for dancers and performers,” he said.

“One of last year’s winners went to dance at the Crown Casino in Melbourne.

“They’ve been training so hard for their big day, it’s great to see it all paying off. We have had a full house.”
