Progress never halts

FIFTY years is a long time but it is proof of the strength of community that the Aloomba and Fishery Falls Progress Association has lasted so long.
The group celebrated the milestone last night with a barbecue and a short general meeting to acknowledge past senior members and contribute funny stories and how far the organisation had come.
Secretary Emily Rossi said she hoped the group would continue for another 50 years.
“It’s amazing that locals have been able to continue the progress association for so long. We hope it continues but that really comes down to the community members,” she said.
“We’d love to welcome new members as well.”
Cairns Regional Council Division 1 representative Brett Moller said reaching 50 years was remarkable for small rural communities.
“It shows a strong community spirit and a caring and a willingness to make a contribution,” he said.
“The progress association meetings allow a two-way flow of information from community to their local councillor on local issues. It also helps inform the community of the council’s activities and directions so everyone is included and connected.
“The feedback I get at the these meetings also involves not just those communities but local kindy and school issues, farming, business and infrastructure in so far as it relates to the council. It is wide reaching and at a grassroots level.”
Cr Moller listed delivering road widening for Fixter, Hesp and Lehman roads, community hall and toilet repairs and painting and other road and water supply maintenance projects as the highlights of his time as the district’s representative. He said consultation with the group had resulted in plans for a movie night at Rossi Park, Aloomba in September.
