Celebrations put spotlight on good health

-

AN important event during Naidoc Week is Community Health Day – not only does it celebrate the theme, it promotes a good health message.

WuChopperen Health Service hosts a Community Health Day every Naidoc Week. Board chair Donnella Mills said it was an opportunity to provide good health information to the community with about 400 people of all ages expected to attend.

There would be plenty of fun activities for the children as well as health-based activities for everyone.

Ms Mills said a number of information stalls would provide information on topics including the health effects of smoking and sugary drinks.

“We’re going to have four or five language workshops conducted by elders,” Ms Mills said.

These would be a simple introduction to some traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, she said.

“We recognise the link between languages, culture, identity and good health,” she said. “People’s health and wellbeing is improved if they speak their own native tongue.” The free community health day will be held at 6 Moignard St, Manoora, between 11am and 3pm.

Other events throughout the week include a primary school students and a high school students disco, movie night and sports tryout day. IT’S about that time of year when the travel companies flood your inbox with flight and accommodation deals, that 4.55pm procrastination turns into a travel-related Google-frenzy and you can feel yourself hanging out for a break. It’s time to get away. If you’re procrastinating booking that trip, here are three reasons you should stop doing that and click “confirm”:

■ If you’re rundown and genuinely need a break, you won’t be very productive … and probably not too inspiring to be around.

■ Travel is good for the mind, body and soul. It opens your mind to a world outside of your daily routine.

■ You simply deserve Enough said.
