GOLF WORLD FNQ GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2017 Golf World Cairns FNQ Golf Championships and Isuzu Qld Open Regional Qualifier was played over Saturday and Sunday at the Mossman Golf Club. In the Open category, former Mareeba GC member John Smoljko (Ryde Parramatta GC) took a 4 shot lead with a 4 under 68 from El Arish Country Club Champion Jake Perkins shooting a par round of 72. The tight layout of the Mossman GC presented a challenge for golfers with Nick Scomazzon (The Hills/Palmer Sear Reef) the next best on 75. Sunday saw the weather a little warmer and current HMBGC Junior Champion Will Florimo (The Hills) making the most shooting an even par 72 to move up the field. John Smoljko even by his own words didn’t strike the ball well, but certainly played steady golf – shooting a 2 over par 74. With Jake Perkins dropping off the pace, Smoljko in the end took out the Championships Rhys Bawden, John Brundson and Adam Reed watch Derek Hall take a shot during the Holden Scramble. quite comfortably. John Smoljko has now gained a direct entry into the Isuzu Qld Open at the Brisbane Golf Club from October 26-29. In the Open Juniors and FNQ Close section, Will Florimo and Nick Scomazzon needed a sudden death playoff, with Will continuing his 2nd round hot form to birdie the first playoff hole and take out the both titles. Atherton GC’s Phil Henricks took out the Seniors title. In the Mid-Amateur, Michael Benjak (PPGC) and Matt Spilsbury (Cairns GC) were tied after 36 holes, and Matt prevailed in that sudden death playoff over Michael. In B Grade Gordonvale GC’s Michael Morgan lead Matty Smith and Bret Deuble (Mossman GC) and Lindsay Perkins (El Arish). Morgan maintained his position throughout Sunday’s round, taking out B Grade from Lindsay Perkins. In C Grade, Cairns GC’s Darren Dutton held a 3 shot lead over Mossman’s David Heron, and the status quo was maintained for Sunday with Dutton winning by 3 shots. In the Inter Club Teams Challenge, Father and Son – Lindsay and Jake Perkins combined with Stewart Worth to carry the title for 2017 for El Arish Country Club. And in the 2017 Champion of Champions, Jake Perkins was the Open winner, Lindsay Perkins was the B Grade, Stewart Worth the C Grade, Phil Henricks the Seniors winner and Will Florimo the Junior winner.
