Legend races for city pride

- TOM VOLLING tom.volling@news.com.au

A FOUR-time Olympian will help Cairns topple rival cities in a running race this year.

The Far North has adopted Ballarat marathon man Steve Moneghetti to compete in the Run for the Reef event in September.

Mr Moneghetti reckons the rival cities Townsville and Mackay won’t stand a chance against Cairns.

“Townsville have signed up dual Olympian Jess Trengove and Mackay have their very own world champion Benita Willis, but I am confident Cairns will get huge support and come out on top,” the 54year-old said.

The CITYRUN event, which will be held on the Cairns Esplanade, starts at the same time across the three cities on Friday night on September 15.

Participants’ times will be recorded as they cross the start line and will be compared with the other cities’ runners.

The winning city will be the one which attracts the most participants in the City v City Challenge.

“CITYRUN is all about participation. The competition is great, but the focus is raising funds for Great Barrier Reef Research and that is a fantastic objective, especially for this region,” Mr Moneghetti said.

Fundraising and 20 per cent of the registration fee will go directly to the James Cook University Run for the Great Barrier Reef Fund. MENTOR PHIL LOCKYER MENTEE JAKE THOMSON
