Wigs work wonders
Great help for cancer patients
WOMEN who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment now have a free turban and wig service in Cairns.
The Cancer Council Queensland’s initiative is giving women a confidence boost when they need it the most.
Debra McAteer is from Mission Beach and staying at the Marylyn Mayo Lodge in Cairns while she receives treatment for breast cancer.
She said the wig and turban service gave her a practical way to feel better about herself.
“I accessed the wig and turban service when I started losing my hair. It is a fabulous service and so important to have,” she said.
“Losing your hair can be extremely devastating as a woman, so to be given a wig, or turban, is terrific.”
She said being able to wear a wig or turban also connected her back into society.
“It’s nice to be able to go out in public and feel confident, without people looking at you because you have no hair and look unwell,” she said.
“I could not speak more highly about the service and the experience.”
Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan said more women going through cancer treatment needed to be made aware about the service.
“Hair loss can be one of the most distressing side effects of cancer treatment, which is why we’re reaching out to help,” Ms McMillan said.
“This year from our Cairns office, we’ve already loaned 13 wigs and 22 turbans to women experiencing hair loss as a result of cancer treatment.”
She said the service, which is funded by ESA International and community donations, had a wig or turban to match any personality that walked through the door.
“We have a wide range of wigs in various colours and lengths to suit any complexion, or if clients would prefer a turban, we offer those in a variety of styles, colours and patterns,” she said. To book an appointment with the ESA Wig and Turban Service call the Cancer Council on 13 11 20 or visit cancerqld.org.au.
