Tijuana Cartel to rock with region’s youth

-

ONE of the country’s hottest new bands will rock out in Cooktown and jam with the region’s young musical talent this weekend.

Gold Coast four-piece Tijuana Cartel will make the trek north to the Endeavour River township to kick off the PCYC’s attempts to engage with youth in the area.

The Triple J Unearthed winners are known for their multi-layered sounds that feature trumpet, percussion and a touch of the flamenco guitar. A free musical workshop and jam with the band will be held on Saturday afternoon for beginners and seasoned musicians.

PCYC administration officer Sandra Gougeon said the band’s arrival would tap into the town’s cultural scene.

“With Cooktown being away from everything, our main activities are culturaltype things. So we can have musicians into town coming in and helping us,” she said.

Co-producers, guitarists and keyboard players of Tijuana Cartel are Paul George and Carey O’Sullivan, as well as Regan Hoskins as MC and Daniel Gonzalez on Latin percussion.

The band has been on Australia’s festival circuit having performed at shows such as Byron Bay Blues and Roots, Woodford music festival and Earth Dance in Western Australia. PCYC have already sold 200 tickets for Saturday night’s concert with another 800 up for grabs on the day.

About 10 local musicians have registered for the free workshop.

“We want to help youth develop find their skills. We haven’t had any sort of activity in the past – this is the first,” Ms Gougeon said.

The town’s three schools have been approached to get involved in the performance.
