Academic excellence on show

By Nicholas Lauder, Year 12, prefect and academic captain, St Augustine’s College

-

ST Augustine’s College held its academic assembly earlier this month, which celebrated the academic excellence that many of the boys exhibited in semester one.

Each student had their moment on the stage to receive their certificate.

This was especially sweet for the Year 7s who have started their campaign at Saints very well and the Year 12s who are on track to finish the year strongly.

There were many supportive parents at the July 20 event. The audience was led with lots of proud fathers and amateur photographers (especially mums).

The assembly wasn’t just for the academic award winners as there were many other items of interest.

The Royal Australian Navy rock band visited, playing with the school band and performing their rendition of Play That Funky Music.

Two junior students, Cory Dent and Elliot Bairstow, addressed the college about the upcoming release of their newly developed app

We started the class with several technical exercises that introduced the contemporary style of dance focusing on our connections with the floor and music. Piran taught the group a piece of repertoire that included a range of challenging movements.

Naiara then taught a PowerShot.

The PowerShot app will be used on mobile phones to measure the speed at which an object moves and it is said to be more accurate than anything else on the market.

Two senior students spoke about their recent experience at the Marist Youth Festival in Sydney over the holidays which was held at St Joseph’s College, Hunter’s Hill.

At the festival, the boys delved deeper into contemporary issues of faith and justice and learned about what it means to be a Marist today.

Finally, the college was treated to some wise and valuable words from a special guest speaker, John Andrejic.

Mr Andrejic completed his schooling at St Augustine’s almost 30 years ago.

Since then he has had many jobs with several different employers and is now the chief executive of the Cairns Regional Council.

At the conclusion of the assembly, the award-winners and their parents had a lovely morning tea.
