A NEW resource for women facing unexpected pregnancies is opening at Manunda.

Chloe’s Place is a new facility that Cairns Pregnancy Help will operate from.

President Nat Cooksley, a former Cairns Hospital doctor, said it would be a hub for expecting and new parents who were facing difficult circumstances.

“We know that one in two pregnancies in Australia are unexpected. We all know someone in a family who is a surprise baby. It can be pretty overwhelming at the time,” she said.

Vice-president Cristy Mock said the support given at Chloe’s Place would have a huge impact on lives.

“We have counselling support for those unexpected moments when you’re overwhelmed with pregnancy,” she said. “We also have practical help. We have basic essential baby items that are needed to give to clients and most recently we’re opening up a second-hand baby clothing store for the wider Cairns community so anyone can come and get a bargain.

“All those profits go back into helping and supporting clients.”

Mrs Cooksley said the name of the facility had a twofold meaning.

“Chloe is a really common name in the 20 to 35-year-old age group, which is the age group that most of our clients are in,” she said.

“It’s also a dear friend of mine who had an unexpected pregnancy a few years ago. She’s excited about what we’re doing, it represents a lot of people.”

Mrs Mock said all of the team hoped Chloe’s Place would offer a completely holistic approach to pregnancy support.

"It’s meant to be an exciting time for people but, sometimes people are in such situations where it’s not very exciting, it’s overwhelming and scary,” she said.

“We hope that at Chloe’s Place nobody feels unsupported in being able to continue on with a pregnancy and have all their own dreams and hopes and desires for that little one.

“We want to be able to provide as much practical support as possible to make it a bit easier for people.”
