Scott targets maiden title
MOTOR RACING SCOTT McLaughlin has bolted into the Supercars Championship lead but just how long DJR Team Penske can hold on to the category’s hottest talent remains a closely guarded secret.
McLaughlin will take the series lead (1608 points) into this weekend’s Ipswich Super Sprint, where he will attempt to hold off the incredibly consistent six-time championship winner Jamie Whincup (1602).
McLaughlin, 24, has lived up to expectations this year following his high-profile switch from Garry Rogers Motorsport, where he claimed third in last year’s championship.
While teammate Fabian Coulthard was the early championship leader, McLaughlin moved into first spot with a win in Townsville and is determined to claim his maiden title.
McLaughlin’s defection to DJR Team Penske on a “multiyear” deal in the off-season was a major move and the Kiwi is prohibited from disclosing how long he will race for the Stapylton-based franchise. “I can’t say,” he said. “How can I not be happy? I’m probably in the best car and best position I’ve ever been in my career.
“I really enjoyed GRM but it’s a different vibe now and I’m enjoying the challenge. I feel like I’ve exceeded my own expectations in some ways.
“I knew we’d be capable of it but the way the team has come together as a whole is great.”
McLaughlin has thrived in the Ford, registering 12 consecutive front-row qualifying performances.
He has produced five wins from his past eight races and is confident he can withstand a Whincup onslaught in the back end of the year.
“It’s cool to be part of the battle,” he said. “We are always keeping an eye on what those guys are doing.
“It’s going to be a tough end to the year and a great battle. I’m really excited for it.”
Practice begins at Queensland Raceway tomorrow, with racing on the weekend.
