A CLASSIC community sporting event will mark 10 years in September.
Entries are open now for the Ona Mission Multisport Adventure Challenge for runners, paddlers and bike riders and organisers hope this year’s event is the biggest yet.
Event director Richard Blanchette said the September 3 competition was perfect for both newcomers to multisport and seasoned competitors.
“There are so many options – with a short and long course, solo and team categories and a pairs category for those who’d like to run, ride and paddle together,” he said.
“The pairs category is the only one for double kayaks, skis or outriggers and it’s great for new paddlers.”
There are also separate categories for three and four person teams this year.
The junior category is back after a successful introduction last year for 13 to 17-year-olds in the short course.
The Ona Mission Multisport Adventure is run by Cassowary Coast Multisport Club volunteers with funds raised going to the club and the Mission Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. Entrants come from all over North Queensland and other parts of Australia.
Last year there was an increase in the number of locals.
The short course is two 4km paddles, a 7km run, 4km run and 23km bike ride. The long course is an 8km and 4km paddle, an 11km and 8km run, and a 30km bike ride.
Organisers are looking for volunteers to help as timekeepers, water point marshals on the mainland and on Dunk Island, first aid officers and boat operators.
