Man’s fate sealed
HONOLULU: A judge has sentenced a Hawaii man to four years in prison for harassing a pregnant Hawaiian monk seal. Hawaiian monk seals are among the world’s most critically endangered marine mammals. There are about 1400 in the wild. Shylo Kaena Akuna harassed the seal in April 2016 at Kauai’s Salt Pond Beach Park, said Kauai Prosecuting Attorney Justin Kollar.
Plane misses cars
SALT LAKE CITY: A small plane crashed on a Utah highway yesterday, killing two couples heading for a holiday but narrowly missing cars when it barrelled across the lanes through a gap in traffic. The plane went down shortly after takeoff from a municipal airport north of Salt Lake City.
Judges cop life
BUENOS AIRES: Four former federal judges in Argentina were sentenced yesterday to life in prison for crimes against humanity committed during the country’s last dictatorship. The court ruled ex-judges Rolando Carrizo, Guillermo Petra Recabarren, Luis Miret and Otilio Romano participated in kidnappings, torture and murders.
More fires rage
MACAO: Forest fires raged yesterday in central Portugal, forcing thousands to flee just a month after deadly blazes left more than 60 people dead. The biggest blaze was in Serta where more than a quarter of the country’s firefighters were attempting to halt its progress.
