Mate against mate in FNQ Cup showdown

- JACOB GRAMS

FOOTBALL TWO mates will go head-tohead on the sidelines in tonight’s Intersport Cup final but there will be no love lost between those contesting it on the field.

Leichhardt play Edge Hill in arguably the most unlikely scenario you could dream of, particularly in the men’s final, pitting ex-Tigers coach John Dillon against a man who played under him, Rob Wales.

The match promises entertainment-plus for fans since the teams have put on 15 goals between them in three spiteful league contests this season.

Dillon said their previous meetings had been played in good spirits and expected the same tonight, although both teams would desperately like to salvage something from a poor season.

“It has been a bit of a funny season, losing games we probably should have got something out of but didn’t,” he said.

Dillon said the club had been fortunate with the Cup draw, which has given them a weekend off, but said it wouldn’t matter come game time.

“In Cup finals, form, everything, goes out the window. It’s just about who turns up on the day and there’s always a bit of luck involved as well,” he said.

Edge Hill coach Rob Wales said the players were excited to get something for the club in their 50th season, other than the wooden spoon.

“They’re pumped chance to get some he said.

“But I think John will go in with the same mentality. They’re looking to get something out of the season as well.”

Wales said wins over Stratford and Southside proved they had the class to win, but said it would take a “collective effort” to get the job done. for a silverware,” 6pm — women: Leichhardt v Edge Hill, Endeavour Park 8pm — men: Leichhardt v Edge Hill, Endeavour Park Men’s path to the final Leichhardt: d Mareeba 5-4, d Atherton 5-0 Edge Hill: d Stratford 3-1, d Southside 5-2
