Sceresini’s special touch

Peter Sceresini’s not-so-secret weapon strictly isn’t even a hockey accessory but it means the Queensland Country star (above) has yet to back away from a contest at the national titles. Truth be told, the Brothers captain’s cricket glove has been on his left hand since he broke it “around Easter” and now he refuses to take it off. “It’s just a confidence thing now. I’m used to it and now I can just go into tackles harder,” said Sceresini.

PETER Sceresini’s not-so-secret weapon strictly isn’t even a hockey accessory but it means the Queensland Country star has yet to back away from a contest at the national titles.

Truth be told, the Brothers captain’s cricket glove has been on his left hand since he broke it “around Easter” and now he refuses to take it off.

“It’s just a confidence thing now. I’m used to it and now I can just go into tackles harder,” said Sceresini, who captained Atherton in the Cricket Far North competition in the summer.

“I just went into the cricket bag and cut it up a bit to make it work a bit better.

“I had to cut out the palm and the ends of the fingers just to get a feel for the stick.”

It has obviously been working for Sceresini and the Queensland Country team, who have defied expectations to sit in a strong position for a semi-final place.

Despite a raft of injuries coming into the tournament, the youthful side lifted to beat NSW 2-0 on Day 1 on Friday.

After a flying start yielded two goals in the opening 15 minutes, Queensland Country assistant coach Matt Cook said “world-class” saves from Brett Borresen and desperate defence under the leadership of Daniel Ginnaw, who received player of the match, allowed them to keep a clean sheet and claim a crucial three points.

They followed it up with a 5-2 win over South Australia and a 2-1 loss to Victoria.

The women have been unbeatable in their first three matches, two of which had Cairns players Leigh Thomas and Haylee Brodin awarded player-of-the-match honours.

“The girls are going really well. The team itself is awesome. They’re definitely one of the strongest teams,” Cook said.

Queensland takes on Western Australia today in the last pool match before finals, which start on Friday after a rest day tomorrow.
