Pilot survives crash

• • • A PILOT is lucky to be alive after crashing a Robinson 44 helicopter on a Julatten property yesterday. Residents heard a helicopter flying over rural properties before hearing a loud bang about 3pm. Emergency crews were called to the scene, where the pilot walked away from the crash with no injuries. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is to investigat­e the cause of the crash.

Networking event

Teens charged

TWO teenage youths have been charged with traffickin­g after police seized drugs from Smithfield home. Detectives raided the home seizing cannabis, phones and drug related parapherna­lia. A boy, 15 and girl, 16, were charged with one count each of traffickin­g a dangerous drug, possessing of a dangerous drug and possessing of a drug utensil. They will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.

Tree removal

CAIRNS Regional Council staff will remove three diseased bismarckia palms near the Cairns Lagoon today. An assessment identified bacterial infection, decay of the root crown and other issues making them unsafe. The works will coincide with the lagoon’s closure for weekly maintenanc­e. The council intends to replace the palms during a “broader refresh” of the Esplanade next year, as it will require changes to the pavement and pavers to ensure the new palms remain healthy.
