Co-ordinate all traffic lights
IF Department of Transport and Main Roads officials are considering synchronisation of Sheridan St-Captain Cook Highway traffic lights it needs to start from the CBD through to Stratford.
It’s impossible to get good traffic flow along this main arterial route without frustrating stop-start holdups, mainly at the Upward and Grove street intersections.
Better co-ordination is required at the traffic signals at Airport Avenue and Aeroglen Drive, particularly during peak times.
Ideally the Whitfield St, Aeroglen, intersection on the Captain Cook Highway at general aviation controlled by traffic lights should be closed.
Turning lanes controlled by lights would still allow traffic to turn right into general aviation from the city while slip lanes provide other access in and out.
Another option would be to close this intersection altogether and create a new general aviation entrance at the northern end of the airport at the Arnold St, Stratford, lights.
The ridiculous situation of the 40km/h speed limit near Mother of Good Counsel School needs to stop.
There are traffic signals here to allow children to cross safely without slowing traffic flow.
This speed limit doesn’t occur on other main roads outside schools in Cairns, particularly Parramatta Park State School on Mulgrave Rd and outside St Francis Xavier’s School on McCoombe St at Manunda.
The council has successfully synchronised the Spence St traffic lights through the CBD which has greatly improved vehicle movements.
Surely TMR can do the same along Sheridan St too. Nick Dalton nick.dalton@news.com.au
