Cattle prices remain firm

- BRONWYN WHEATCROFT

THE number of cattle available at Tuesday’s Mareeba Prime and Store Cattle Sale were down after last Friday’s Mareeba Combined Agents Special Store Sale.

Elders livestock agent Kate Knowles said Tuesday’s sale prices were similar to last week’s, however, there were less cattle.

“We didn’t have the gallery of buyer there this week but the market held firm,” she said.

“Friday’s special store sale was very good and we didn’t think the prices would get to where they did.

“We had a few buyers who came up from Charters Towers which helped boost prices.”

A total head of 1209 cattle were penned for the day which averaged out to $589.77 a head over all lines.

At Tuesday’s Prime and Store Cattle Sale there was only one major meatworks buyer with Mareeba Combined Agents penning a total of 640 head of mixed quality cattle.

The market was similar to last week with limited heavy weight cattle.

Feeder weight bulls and store cows made up most of the yarding with some small consignments of good quality store steers and heifers.

At Tuesday’s sale the top store steers went for 321.2¢/kg.

Butchers steers were sold at a high of 264.2¢/kg, butchers heifers at 214.2¢/kg, wholesale cows at 210.2¢/kg and export slaughter ox at 247.2¢/kg.

The next Combined Agents Special Store Sale will be Friday, September 8, at 10am.
