Falling tree kills 13
LISBON: Thirteen people were crushed to death and 49 injured when a 200-year-old oak tree fell on them at a religious festival on the Portuguese island of Madeira, doctors said. The massive tree toppled into a crowd gathered near Funchal for the Lady of the Mount festival in honour of Madeira’s patron saint, Mary.
Mrs Mugabe assault
HARARE: The wife of Zimbabwean President Robert Mug-abe is being sought by South African police over claims she attacked a model in a hotel. Grace Mugabe, 52, allegedly attacked Gabriella Engels while she was visiting the couple’s sons in Johannesburg. Miss Engels, 20, claims Mrs Mugabe’s bodyguards stood by as she was hit with an extension cord. She posted a picture on social media showing a gash in her forehead.

Jews told to shower
ZURICH: Switzerland’s tourism office yesterday decried an “unfortunate” incident in which a small Alpine hotel posted a sign asking “Jewish guests” to shower before swimming in the hotel pool. The Simon Wiesenthal Centre demanded the closure of the Paradies Arosa hotel.

FREETOWN: Sierra Leone’s president issued a desperate appeal for help, a day after flooding ravaged the country’s capital, killing more than 300 people and leaving hundreds more missing. President Ernest Bai Koroma fought back tears and said the devastation was overwhelming the country.
